In reality, a VPN does a specific, useful job — and it’s worth understanding exactly what that job is before deciding whether you actually need one. What a VPN Actually Does
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server run by the VPN provider, routing your internet traffic through that server rather than sending it directly. Two things result from this: your internet provider and anyone monitoring your local network can’t see what websites you’re visiting (though they can see that you’re connected to a VPN), and the websites you visit see the VPN server’s location and IP address rather than your own.
What a VPN Genuinely Protects You From
Snooping on public Wi-Fi. This is the most commonly cited legitimate use case, and it’s a real one — on an unsecured public network (a coffee shop, airport, or hotel), a VPN encrypts your traffic so someone else on that same network can’t intercept what you’re sending. How to Choose a Reputable VPN
If you decide you want one, prioritise providers with a genuinely independently audited no-logs policy (not just a claim on their marketing page), a track record of not complying with data requests in ways that compromise user privacy, and transparent ownership. Be sceptical of free VPN services in particular — running VPN server infrastructure costs real money, and a “free” VPN provider often makes up that cost by logging and selling user data, which defeats the entire purpose of using one.
